I began studying with Lauralyn Kolb October 2018. She is a consummate vocal pedagogue who is overflowing with wisdom. I have gained tremendous insight into the journey of vocal art because of Lauralyn’s tireless dedication and attention to detail. Lauralyn has helped me become a better singer—I am profoundly grateful to/for her, and I hope to study with her for many years to come.

Lauralyn’s teaching is the perfect combination of healthy technique and interesting/challenging repertoire. It is because of her teaching that I was able to pursue a degree in singing, and now enjoy a fruitful career of professional choral singing and conducting. I use the training I received from her as the foundation of both my own singing, and the lessons that I give to my students.

I began studying with Lauralyn at age 15. I’m now 39. Over the course of those 24 (!) years, I have had a couple other voice teachers as I’ve pursued a career in musical theater and operetta, but I have returned to Lauralyn (via FaceTime and in person when possible) for this reason: she is absolutely the best. Lauralyn has an understanding of vocal pedagogy unlike anyone I’ve met. Her ear is magical and can pick up subtle nuances in the voice, even on remote lessons. She communicates instruction in both scientific and delightfully creative terms. I can’t recommend her highly enough. She’s a remarkable teacher and a beautiful human being.

I'm doing mostly Irish and folk music instead of classical now, but everything I learned from Lauralyn about how to warm up, place, and protect my voice still applies.

Lauralyn is an amazing teacher, singer, and person. I contacted her for voice lessons in the spring of 2018 while I was recovering from vocal cord surgery and have no plans to stop. Lauralyn not only helped rehabilitate my voice and help me gain confidence with my newfound voice, but through her teaching techniques, I have a BETTER vocal sound and sense of understanding about my voice than I ever did before. She establishes an encouraging, educational, and supportive environment that is appropriate for all age levels. Because of her teaching, I am a better singer, musician, and teacher for my own students. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

My progress in improving my singing was immediately evident after a few lessons with Lauralyn Kolb. She is an outstanding voice teacher who comes with decades of experience both as a performer and as a teacher. As a soprano soloist, she has performed most of the major masterworks with choir and orchestra and she has an extensive resume of arias and art song. Lauralyn teaches students at all levels: from beginning students to professional singers. She meets students where they are vocally and helps them to progress forward in their learning and vocal technique. After each lesson with her, I leave with several tools and exercises to improve my singing. I feel more confident in my solo singing as a result of my lessons with her. Although many of her students are classical singers, Mrs. Kolb is an excellent teacher of musical theater and has several students working in that field.

Singing can be a very vulnerable act. Because of this, you need to have complete trust in your teacher when training. I took lessons with Lauralyn from ages 16-18 and when I decided as a professional performer to start taking them again, Lauralyn was the first person I turned to. Not only do I trust her, but I credit her for my vocal flexibility, and thoroughly appreciate the fact that she never stops learning and training herself. Her mental rolodex of material is vast and she often speaks of new workshops or masterclasses she's attended. She is constantly evolving with the craft. Someone you can trust, who is knowledgeable, and who also stays current. That's what makes an excellent teacher and Lauralyn is just that.

Lauralyn Kolb is one of those teachers that goes above and beyond for her students, and I was beyond lucky to have begun my nearly thirty-year singing journey with her! I began voice lessons with Lauralyn when I was in high school. I remember her beautiful, smiling face at every performance, and singing opportunity that ever came my way…She even traveled several hours to see me sing my first Tosca in New York City a few years ago! Her presence meant a great deal to me, and to share that experience with her is a memory I’ll cherish for a lifetime!
I have also gained wisdom and technique from her that you cannot put a price tag on. The technique in which Lauralyn teaches is not only efficient, but it is sustainable. She is also a nurturer of cross-over artistry, and never once made me choose one genre over another, she just taught me how to sing, and sing properly.
I have a notebook of handwritten vocal exercises in Lauralyn’s penmanship, that is one of my most cherished possessions! I still use all her “stuff” every day on myself, and my students…who in turn use it on their students! Lauralyn fondly calls them her “vocal grandchildren,” which we all just love!
To be a voice teacher is a very special thing; however, a voice teacher with the ability to build not only a beautiful voice, but build a singer, is invaluable. Lauralyn builds singers, and she really is ‘one in a million.’
